Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • ¾ cup shortening
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1½ teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1½ teaspoons ginger
  • ½ cup sugar (for rolling)

Steps

  1. Preheat oven to 375°.
  2. Mix together 1 cup sugar, shortening, molasses, and egg until well combined.
  3. Add flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger. Mix well together.
  4. Roll small portions of dough between your hands into small balls.
  5. Roll each ball in the remaining ½ cup of sugar to coat.
  6. Place balls 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet.
  7. Bake at 375° for 12–15 minutes. The cookies will flatten out as they bake.
  8. Remove from oven and cool. Makes about 5 dozen.
