Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- ¾ cup shortening
- ¼ cup molasses
- 1 egg
- 2 cups flour
- 1½ teaspoons baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon cloves
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- 1½ teaspoons ginger
- ½ cup sugar (for rolling)
Steps
- Preheat oven to 375°.
- Mix together 1 cup sugar, shortening, molasses, and egg until well combined.
- Add flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger. Mix well together.
- Roll small portions of dough between your hands into small balls.
- Roll each ball in the remaining ½ cup of sugar to coat.
- Place balls 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet.
- Bake at 375° for 12–15 minutes. The cookies will flatten out as they bake.
- Remove from oven and cool. Makes about 5 dozen.
