Ingredients

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1¼ cups sugar
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons nutmeg
  • 1¼ cups raisins
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 3 large eggs

Steps

  1. Lightly grease 2 cookie sheets.
  2. Mix all ingredients except milk and eggs together in a bowl.
  3. Whisk eggs and milk together in a 2-cup measure.
  4. Add the egg-milk mixture to the flour mixture and combine. (The dough can be covered and kept overnight at this stage if desired.)
  5. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and cut into 6 pieces.
  6. Pat each piece into a round loaf.
  7. Arrange 3 loaves 3 inches apart on each prepared cookie sheet.
  8. With a sharp knife, cut a cross on the top of each loaf.
  9. Bake 1 cookie sheet at a time at 350° for 30–35 minutes, until loaves are lightly browned and a pick inserted near the center comes out clean.
