Ingredients

  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • Salt (*amount not specified*)
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ cup cold shortening
  • ¼ cup chopped nuts
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 cup milk

Steps

  1. Sift the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder together into a bowl.
  2. Cut in the cold shortening with 2 knives or a pastry blender until crumbly.
  3. Add the chopped nuts and stir to combine.
  4. Beat the egg and egg yolk together, then add the milk.
  5. Add the milk-egg mixture to the flour mixture and mix quickly, just enough to dampen the flour.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan.
  7. Bake in a hot oven (400°F) for 40 minutes.
