Toffee Bars

Ingredients
- 1¾ cups flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup oleo (margarine), softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 egg, separated
- ½ cup nuts, finely chopped
Steps
- Preheat oven to 275°F. Grease a 15½ x 10½-inch jelly roll pan.
- In a large bowl, measure all ingredients except the egg white and nuts.
- With a mixer at low speed, beat the ingredients just until blended. Increase speed to medium and beat until well blended.
- Pat the dough evenly into the prepared pan.
- In a cup, beat the egg white slightly with a fork. Brush over the top of the dough.
- Sprinkle the finely chopped nuts evenly over the top.
- Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes, or until golden. (They need long, slow baking at low temp.)
- Cut immediately upon removing from the oven. Remove bars to cool on a rack.
- Store in a tightly covered container and use within a week.
