Ingredients

  • 1¾ cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup oleo (margarine), softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 egg, separated
  • ½ cup nuts, finely chopped

Steps

  1. Preheat oven to 275°F. Grease a 15½ x 10½-inch jelly roll pan.
  2. In a large bowl, measure all ingredients except the egg white and nuts.
  3. With a mixer at low speed, beat the ingredients just until blended. Increase speed to medium and beat until well blended.
  4. Pat the dough evenly into the prepared pan.
  5. In a cup, beat the egg white slightly with a fork. Brush over the top of the dough.
  6. Sprinkle the finely chopped nuts evenly over the top.
  7. Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes, or until golden. (They need long, slow baking at low temp.)
  8. Cut immediately upon removing from the oven. Remove bars to cool on a rack.
  9. Store in a tightly covered container and use within a week.
