Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/3 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 cup raisins *(optional)*

Steps

  1. Cream together the shortening, brown sugar, and egg very well.
  2. Add the molasses and milk; mix to combine.
  3. Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  4. Blend the sifted dry ingredients into the creamed mixture.
  5. Fold in raisins if using.
  6. Drop dough by spoonfuls onto a baking sheet, spacing cookies 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 15 minutes.
